Does Gaga’s video deserve ‘Applause?’

Lady Gaga’s music videos are like hallucination-induced short films. I know music is an interpretation, but half the time I feel like I’ve got a “WTF?” face the whole time I’m watching. Applause was released Monday the 19th and apparently it’s chock-full of cultural references—an ambitious BuzzFeed staffer broke it down:

“The curtain opened Monday on the video for “Applause,” Lady Gaga’s first single in almost two years. And she’s right back at it, putting out a video rich with various influences and symbolism-overload, though this time it clocks in at a reasonable 3:36 instead of the nine-minute video epics we were growing accustomed to from her. “Applause” was directed by famed fashion photographer duo (and previous Gaga collaborators) Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin.

The video is visually stunning, but it can also get confusing, with references to Greek mythology, German expressionist horror films, Hindu goddesses, and callbacks to previous Gaga videos. We’re here to help break it all down for you.”

Attention all KatyCats and Little Monsters—it’s almost time!
