New singles are dropping everywhere this weekend: Glee star Naya Rivera debuted her first solo track Friday afternoon. From her as-yet-untitled studio album (release unknown), “Sorry” features Big Sean (her boyfriend of the past few months), random sirens, and an irritatingly repetitive hook.
As a Gleek, I know what Naya’s capable of—girl can SING. Her pipes sometimes put Lea Michele to shame, imagine the blasphemy. I’ve heard her do some staggeringly beautiful renditions of both classic and current tunes, so to hear her voice be completely buried beneath layers of auto-tune and sound effects was wholly disappointing. I was hoping for less sass and more soul. Plus to have the theme be something as shallow as, “He’s my man now, he likes me better. #SorryNotSorry” was just not what I was expecting.
Sample lyrics: “I don’t really know much about you, but it’s clear you know my name. / So I guess all I can tell you is that I don’t have much to say. / If you used to be the one, well I don’t know shit about it, but I know you are mad about it.”
The only other non-Glee related reference we have for Naya’s studio skills was her guest spot in 2Cellos’ take on Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole,” released last year. Again, we could barely distinguish her voice. I sincerely hope that the Naya we know and love is hiding somewhere on her upcoming album, but until then, I’ll have to stick to listening to Santana instead.
